Seeds of War Creeping into Circuits of Silence A Decade of Chinese Cyber Intrusion and Power Grid 2009-2023
The U.S. power grid has been targeted by quiet intruders from foreign lands for more than a decade. in 2009, as reported by the Wall Street journal, hackers allegedly of Chinese and Russian origin infiltrated the U.S. power grid and discovered traces of programs aimed at future disruption. in 2012 Cyberattacks allegedly originating in China were launched against power companies in the Rayleigh area, and signs of surveillance through phishing and network exploration emerged. In addition, the SolarWinds incident in late 2020 revealed that while Russian-led cyberattacks were a hot topic, Chinese hackers were also behind the attacks. in 2023, the NSA and FBI announced a Chinese infiltration operation dubbed "Volt Typhoon." The group was using existing tools to covertly infiltrate infrastructure such as telecommunications, power, and water systems in preparation for sabotage aimed at disrupting contingencies. None of the cases have resulted in power outages or clear destruction, b
ut they do indicate that sparks are quietly building up in the depths of national security.
