Beyond the Sea of Fluctuating Voices The Path of Pursuing the Truth of Ethics December 2025

Beyond the Sea of Fluctuating Voices The Path of Pursuing the Truth of Ethics December 2025

Ethics is often misunderstood as subjective because of disagreement, but this is an understanding that confuses disagreement with the absence of truth, and there is a position that believes there are verifiable standards for ethics. Just as there was one truth even when the shape of the earth was historically debated, ethics needs to be treated as a system that can be updated. By using a two-axis perspective that adds the axes of right and wrong as well as good and evil, the validity of actions can be evaluated across cultural and individual differences. Differences of opinion are often due to biased information or lack of understanding, and can be elaborated through discussion and verification.

In today's world, where AI affects a broad spectrum of society, leaving ethics to subjectivity would lead to a breakdown in institutional design and risk management, and would make it impossible to curb the runaway effects of technology. The European Commission's AI guidelines set forth universal principles such as fairness and transparency. Even in philosophy, methods for reconciling ethics through discussion, such as Rawls' reflective equilibrium, have been established and applied to AI ethics. The misunderstanding of ethics as subjective shakes the foundations of society, so it is essential to maintain an attitude of maintaining an ethical system with objectivity and updatability.
