History of Natural Coastal Decline and Conservation
The natural coastline in Japan shrank to about 55% by 1995 due to port development and seawall construction; in the 2000s, restoration projects based on the "Law for the Promotion of Nature Restoration" were promoted and the restoration of tidal flats in Tokyo Bay attracted attention; in the 2010s, climate change was added and coral reefs in Okinawa became severely bleached; in the 2011s, the number of coral reefs in Japan declined to about 60%, and the number of coral reefs in Okinawa increased. In the 2020s, natural beaches were further reduced and the total length of beaches was less than 50%. In urban areas, landfill development is progressing, and companies and municipalities are working to reduce waste plastics. Further efforts are needed to balance sustainable environmental protection and development.
