Stretching approximately 400 kilometers along the Ou Mountains, this forest corridor connects Mount Hakkoda in Aomori Prefecture to Mount Zao, which straddles Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures. An article from 1996 reports on a development plan for a natural forest corridor running the length of the Ou Mountains, compiled by the Aomori Forestry Bureau. The plan aims to connect scattered protected forests and preserve a continuous forest corridor that allows wildlife to move freely. Simply enclosing and protecting individual forests would fragment wildlife habitats. By maintaining a forest corridor along the mountain range, habitat connectivity and forest ecosystems can be sustained over a wide area. The plan was finalized in fiscal year 1995 and later evolved into the “Green Corridor” system for state-owned forests. According to the Tohoku Forest Management Bureau, the Ou Mountains Green Corridor was established in fiscal year 2000. It is an initiative to nurture forests over many years and support the flow of life from mountain to mountain.
