Rebuilding an Abandoned Mine - Trajectory of the Recycled Mine Park Project (1995-present)
The Recycle Mine Park Plan is a policy formulated by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) in 1995 to promote waste disposal and resource recycling by utilizing abandoned mines. The Mochikoshi Mine in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, where Chugai Mining recovers gold and silver from electronic device waste, and 36 mining facilities nationwide that process approximately 9.8 million tons of waste annually are participating in the plan. The former mining facilities were utilized as a disaster waste treatment center after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The Recycle Mine Park project is contributing to resource security and environmental protection in Japan by stimulating the local economy, promoting resource recycling, and serving as a waste treatment center in the event of a disaster. Further technological innovations and expansion of the base are expected with the aim of building a sustainable resource-r
ecycling society.
