New Life from Ume Seeds - Food Waste Recycling in Wakayama Prefecture - February 1998
In the southern region of Wakayama Prefecture, a recycling project is underway to utilize the large amount of pickled plum seeds generated during the processing of pickled plums to extract cooking oil. In particular, Cooperative Association E2 in Tanabe City, in cooperation with the Industrial Technology Center of Wakayama Prefecture, has developed a technology for extracting and refining pickled plum seeds. Processors of pickled plums dispose of 500,600 tons of seeds annually, and it has been pointed out that this is a cause of salt damage. A feasibility study is underway, and the project is attracting attention as a model for sustainable resource utilization.
In addition, Wakayama Prefecture is also certifying other recycled products that utilize local resources, such as the development of slope greening method materials that recycle logging and thinning materials. These efforts are contributing to the reduction of environmental impact and the revitalization of local industry. In the midst of promoting environmental friendliness, businesses that make effective use of food waste are an important step toward building a recycling-oriented society.
