Green choices weave the future--the role of the sustainable consumer
Did you know that our casual purchases have a significant impact on the global environment? Consumption is more than just an economic activity; it has a deep connection with the environment. It is against this backdrop that the concept of the "green consumer" was born. This refers to people who actively choose environmentally friendly products and services, and their actions are key to shaping a sustainable future.
To support such consumer behavior, the Green Purchasing Network (GPN) was established in Japan in 1996. the GPN works in partnership with businesses, local governments, and consumer organizations to develop criteria for products with low environmental impact and to promote the selection of environmentally conscious products in public procurement. As part of its activities, GPN operates "Eco Products Net" to introduce a wide range of products with low environmental impact, and conducts the "Green Purchasing Awards" to recognize outstanding environmental activities. The company also announces "Green Purchasing Rankings" for local governments to raise awareness of the need for a sustainable society. Through these efforts, guidelines are provided to help consumers make environmentally conscious choices.
In 2000, the "Green Purchasing Law" was enacted to further support these trends. This law requires the national government, local governments, and corporations to give priority to the purchase of products with low environmental impact, which includes recycled paper, energy-efficient home appliances, low-emission vehicles, environmentally friendly stationery, and many other items. Particularly in public procurement, selection based on the criteria of the Green Purchasing Law is mandatory, and the market for environmentally friendly products is expanding.
Another important indicator for consumers to identify products with low environmental impact is the Eco Mark. This is an environmental label certified by the Japan Environment Association, which also works with the Green Purchasing Law to promote sustainable consumption. Products with the Eco Mark are guaranteed to be manufactured, distributed, and disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, providing an indicator for consumers to make better choices.
Acting as a "green consumer" goes beyond simply choosing environmentally friendly products. It has the role of encouraging companies to take environmental measures and promote a more sustainable society. The choices each of us makes are an important step toward leaving a prosperous planet for future generations. To weave an environmentally friendly future, why not turn today's shopping into a "green choice"?
