South China Sea - 2017-2020 Status of Methane Hydrate Development
China has been promoting government-led methane hydrate development in the South China Sea, producing an average of about 16,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day during test mining in 2017 and collecting about 480,000 cubic meters in a cumulative total of 30 days; during the second test mining in 2020, it succeeded in collecting an average of 28,700 cubic meters per day and about 1.23 million cubic meters in a cumulative total of 43 days, significantly improving efficiency. The company is developing technologies to control pressure and temperature on the seafloor with the goal of commercialization by 2030. On the other hand, it faces challenges such as global warming caused by methane leakage, high mining costs (about US$100 per cubic meter), and territorial disputes in the South China Sea. China is focusing on energy security and working to resolve these issues, including environmental impact and international coordination.
