Challenge of Kahoku General Hospital, Tokyo - December 1997

Challenge of Kahoku General Hospital, Tokyo - December 1997

In December 1997, Kawakita General Hospital in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, became the first medical institution to obtain environmental ISO 14001 certification. Facing the reality that 150 tons of waste is generated annually, 25% of which is infectious, the hospital has introduced a sorting and tracking system to ensure transparency. In addition, high-efficiency boilers and LED lighting have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and electricity consumption by 650,000 kilowatt-hours per year. All employees have participated in environmental conservation seminars, and paper consumption has been reduced by 15%. This attitude of working together with the community is a step forward in paving the way for the future of the environment and healthcare.
