The problem of dumping manure into the ocean - from September 1999 to the 2020s

In 1998, 2.12 million kiloliters of human waste was dumped into the ocean annually in Japan, causing serious pollution in Tokyo Bay and Osaka Bay, etc. In the 2010s, the spread of sewage systems and the introduction of biogas technology led to land-based treatment, and by the 2020s, the amount dumped will be almost zero. In particular, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Osaka City have utilized advanced treatment technologies to reduce the marine environmental burden. While issues remain in remote islands and mountainous areas, the use of renewable resources and the conversion to local energy is underway. Policies and technological innovations are accelerating the construction of a sustainable, recycling-oriented society.
