CO2 Concentration and Air Pollution in Yonaguni Island in 2023

CO2 Concentration and Air Pollution in Yonaguni Island in 2023

In the 2020s, CO2 concentration in Yonaguni Island continues to rise, reaching 410ppm in 2023. This is largely due to coal-fired power generation and industrial activities in mainland China, exceeding the 407ppm level in Minamitori Island. In particular, coal-fired power plants operated by Chinese companies such as China Huaneng Group Corporation and China Power Investment Group Corporation emit large amounts of CO2 and PM2.5. 2020's infectious disease expansion caused a temporary decrease in CO2 emissions, which fell by about 6.4% globally and 3.8% in China, but after 2021 PM2.5 concentrations have also temporarily exceeded 50 µg/m³, well above the environmental standard of 35 µg/m³.
