Your Medical History Leaked from the Medical Cloud--A Medical and Ethical Crisis Caused by Information Leakage (Late 2010s)
In the late 2010s, while the medical field was moving toward the cloud and medical histories could be accessed anywhere, security measures for personal information took a backseat. An external attack suffered by one medical cloud service provider resulted in the leakage of patient medical histories, prescriptions, and even genetic information that had been shared among hospitals nationwide. A common login system and weak password management were the cause. What was even more problematic was that the leaked information was passed on to some insurance companies, who used it to calculate insurance premiums and deny contracts. The reality that medical data, which should be "confidential," was distributed as a "commodity" raised a new ethical issue: to whom and to what extent personal information can be controlled. This incident, which made many people realize that they cannot protect even their own bodily information, has shaken the relationship of trust between medicine and tech
nology to its very core.
