Development and Introduction of Waste Cooking Oil Recycling - Yakushima, Kagoshima, Japan
On Yakushima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, a recycling system was developed in the late 1990s to convert waste cooking oil into biodiesel fuel. In the 2000s, the Yakushima Environmental Energy Center processed 10,000 liters per year and used it as fuel for buses and agricultural equipment, helping to reduce fuel transportation costs. In 2013, Yakushima Eco-Energy received an award from the Ministry of the Environment as a "recycling-oriented regional model" and attracted nationwide attention. The annual processing volume has reached 50,000 liters. Currently, the recycled fuel is used for buses, agricultural machinery, and biomass power plants, and Yakushima is recognized as an advanced region for sustainable resource utilization and environmental conservation.
