The Call of Desire: Kabukicho in the Early 2000s

The Call of Desire: Kabukicho in the Early 2000s

A "beauty scout" who was active in the Kabukicho area tells his own tricks and experiences in an unabashed manner. In a first-person tone, he explains in a straightforward manner how he sharply discerns the psychology of girls and how he leads them into the world of adult entertainment. For example, he assures the reader that "girls will always follow you if you do this" and "in this town, momentum is more important than trust," giving the reader a realistic feeling of being directly overheard in a back alley.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the terms "dating" and "aid-seeking" became common in Shinjuku's Kabukicho district, and the sex industry expanded further. Women who had moved to Tokyo from the countryside with dreams of a life in the city but found themselves at a standstill became easy targets for scouts. They functioned not merely as intermediaries, but as "gatekeepers" between the underworld and young women.

Furthermore, in the early 2000s, just before the police began their "cleansing operation," disorder reigned in the city, with gangs, foreign mafia, and scout groups all mixed together. The scouts manipulated women's psychology and controlled their minds by "inciting anxiety and hope at the same time. They would paint a picture of a future in which they could "earn money with pleasure" or "earn a month's salary in one night," but then cut off any escape route by confronting them with the realities of life's hardships. This technique was tantamount to a demonstration of psychological manipulation and symbolized the "food chain of desire" in Kabukicho.

To supplement the historical background of the time, the "Parisienne Incident" occurred in 2002, in which a gang leader was shot dead in a coffee shop, and the following year, 2003, a large-scale operation to clean up Kabukicho was conducted under the leadership of Governor Ishihara. The police rounded up all the brothels and gang offices in one night, and the order in the town was severely shaken. The impoverishment of young people during the ice age of employment and the chaotic atmosphere just prior to the tightening of regulations make this scout's narrative sound even more realistic.

After all, this "charismatic scout's narrative" is more than just an exposé of the underhanded business. It is a condensed record of the contradictions Shinjuku faced in the early 2000s, including the anxieties of the ice age generation, the whirlpool of urban desires, and the struggle between regulation and undergrounding. Every word spoken at the top of his voice directly captures a cross-section of the times.
