To the Sea of Circulation--"Gateway to Recycling" Engraved on the Port of Noshiro, Akita (Designated in December 2006/Started in 2007)
In December 2006, the Port of Noshiro in Akita Prefecture was designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as a "comprehensive venous logistics hub port (recycling port). The Port of Noshiro was selected as one of the main hubs under this system, which supports marine transportation of waste and recycled resources. Behind this designation was the Northern Akita Eco-Town concept, centered on Odate City and Kosaka Town, where nonferrous metal recycling technologies were concentrated. The Port of Noshiro played an important role as a "sea route of circulation," transporting metal resources recycled inland to overseas destinations via the Sea of Japan. The following year, in 2007, the port's new development began in earnest with the unloading of contaminated soil on a trial basis and the attraction of recycling companies to the port. This was also an effort to embody the principles of the Law for Establishing a Recycling-Oriented Society, which raised
expectations for job creation and industrial revival in the region. Against the backdrop of soaring resource prices and the growth of the Asian economy, the revitalization of the Port of Noshiro symbolized a turning point in the era of "from disposal to revitalization. Today, the port is also attracting attention as a base port for offshore wind power generation, and continues to evolve as a new hub linking the environment and the economy.
