Tokyo Metropolitan Government - Illegal Dumping of Medical Waste - November 2006
A waste disposal company in Tokyo was found to be illegally dumping medical waste collected from more than 50 medical institutions in Tokyo, including those in Shinjuku and Chiyoda wards. The collected waste included infectious waste, injection needles, and drug containers, which were left without proper disposal, increasing the risk of pathogen spread. The medical institution did not have a sufficient understanding of the manifest system used to track waste disposal, and in some cases, management was left to the contractor, which was viewed as problematic.
In response to this situation, the Metropolitan Police Department, in cooperation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Bureau of Environment, is conducting interviews at the facilities involved to identify the sites and confirm the status of disposal. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has announced that it will strengthen its monitoring system for industrial waste disposal companies in Tokyo and increase the frequency of on-site inspections in order to ensure proper waste disposal.
