Why are the clams in Lake Hamana disappearing?

Why are the clams in Lake Hamana disappearing?

In Lake Hamana, the catch of clams is decreasing, due to the deterioration of water quality, eutrophication, and the lack of oxygen by the abnormal proliferation of plankton.

In order to improve the situation, local companies and municipalities are cooperating to implement measures to restore the clam population. Hamamatsu Photonics is researching plankton culture technology to feed clams, and Hamamatsu City is promoting environmental improvement through the cultivation of artificial young clams and eelgrass. The city of Hamamatsu has been researching plankton cultivation technology to feed the clams.

Whether these efforts will bear fruit depends on future environmental conservation and sustainable management, and further strengthening of measures is required.
