Illegal Dumping of Industrial Waste on Ikushima Island - December 1996
Approximately 500,000 tons of industrial waste has been illegally dumped on Ikushima Island, off the coast of Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, posing a serious environmental risk. The waste includes construction debris, plastics, waste oil, and asbestos, and the deposits reach a height of 12 meters. At the request of the residents, a disposal plan combining incineration and off-island transport has been adopted, with a disposal period of 10 years and a total cost estimated at 1.6 billion yen. A special-purpose ship will be used to transport the waste, and after the treatment, the project aims for environmental restoration through afforestation and other measures. The rapid increase in the amount of waste wood during the period of rapid economic growth is the background of the project, and the problem is being solved through the support system of the national and prefectural governments.
