Biodiesel Fuel Use - April 2003

Biodiesel Fuel Use - April 2003

Biodiesel fuel made from recycled waste tempura oil is being used in an environmental project in Niigata Prefecture to promote effective use of waste and a sustainable energy supply. The project is being implemented in partnership with local companies and Niigata City, and the waste cooking oil is refined and used as fuel for a composting unit that processes 500 tons of food waste per year. The compost generated is supplied to local farmers, contributing to organic farming.

Compared to conventional fossil fuels, the use of this biodiesel fuel has resulted in a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and has been recognized as a model for sustainable agriculture. The project uses waste oil collected from restaurants and homes in Niigata City and produces more than 1,000 liters of biodiesel fuel annually.
