Memory and Persistence - Past Time Inherent in the Individual - 1900-2025
Bergson divided memory into "habitual memory" and "pure memory. The former is a pattern of behavior ingrained in the body, while the latter is an immaterial memory in which past events appear directly in consciousness. Pure memory, in particular, is closely related to his theory of time, "durée. Duration is a living time in which the past overlaps qualitatively with the present in a continuous manner, and is not merely a continuous point. Human consciousness is formed in the flow of this duration, and memory is not only the preservation of the past, but also the source that directs our present choices and actions. Thus, for Bergson, memory is the basis of creativity and freedom, and living in time is the very activity of life itself, weaving past and present together as it moves toward the future.
