Song Traveler Weaving Stories: The World of Masashi Sada 1970s - Present Day

Sada Masashi, born April 10, 1952 in Nagasaki, is a singer-songwriter, novelist, and essayist who made his debut in 1973 as the folk duo "Grape" and gained instant attention with "Seirei Nagashi" and "Muenzaka. After the breakup of the duo, he began his solo career in 1976, releasing a series of classic songs such as "Ameyadori," "Kanpaku Sengen," "Sonnet of a Clown," and "Autumn Cherry Blossoms.

His masterpiece "Kanpaku Sengen" humorously depicts an unusual vow made by a husband to his wife, and was greatly appreciated for its humorous and humane content while reflecting the views of men and women at the time. Seirei Nagashi" is a masterpiece that quietly sings about feelings and nostalgia for the deceased against the backdrop of Nagasaki's Seirei Nagashi event, combining local flavor with universal pathos. The "Sonnet of a Clown" is a poetic piece that simultaneously depicts human sorrow and tenderness, and has long been a favorite at concerts. Autumn Cherry Blossoms" delicately depicts a mother's love for and farewell to her daughter-in-law, and has been covered by many other singers.

His contemporaries include Yosui Inoue, Takuro Yoshida, Miyuki Nakajima, and Chiharu Matsuyama. Yosui Inoue led the era with her urban, literary lyrics and sophisticated melodies, while Takuro Yoshida attracted young people with his free and unpretentious songs with strong messages. Miyuki Nakajima's lyrics had a deep human insight and narrative quality, and Chiharu Matsuyama made her presence felt with a sense of scale and a powerful voice that made the most of her Hokkaido origins. Sada Masashi, on the other hand, established her own unique position with her lyrics, which are based on narrative, depicting scenes and full of human emotion.

Since the 1980s, he has also focused on writing novels and essays, and has established a reputation as a writer with works such as "Kaitatsu," "Bizan," and "The Lion Standing in the Wind" that have been made into films. These stories carry themes of the meaning of life, family ties, and the preciousness of life.

As a native of Nagasaki, he also has a strong desire for peace, and continues to be active not only as a musician but also as a social communicator through his peace concerts and charity activities. His creative journey over more than half a century has been a journey of bringing stories to people's hearts, while freely moving between music and literature.
