Biomass Energy Use in the City of Bekshaw - December 2002
The city of Böxö in southern Sweden has switched from its former dependence on oil for energy supply and is now using biomass energy. The biomass power plant operated by Bökkö Energy produces approximately 600 gigawatt-hours of electricity per year from approximately 200,000 tons of thinned wood and sawmill waste, and also provides heat to approximately 90% of the city's buildings. This system reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 250,000 tons per year. The local company Sveaaskog is responsible for supplying the wood, and sustainable resource management is being promoted throughout the region. The project is also expected to create 150 new jobs, reduce energy costs by about 25%, and have an annual economic impact of about 300 million Swedish kronor (about 4 billion yen).
