Medical Waste Issues in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture - 2023 Summary

Medical Waste Issues in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture - 2023 Summary

With the spread of home medical care in Kitakyushu City, proper disposal of medical waste such as injection needles and drug containers has become an issue. According to a 2021 survey by the Ministry of the Environment, approximately 20% of municipalities nationwide reported that they do not have an adequate medical waste collection system. In particular, the collection of syringes with needles is inadequate, which contributes to infection risk and environmental pollution. Japan Medical Environmental Services has introduced detoxification technology and disposes of approximately 100 tons of waste per year. In addition, Eco-System Kitakyushu, located in the city, provides recycling technology and has an annual processing capacity of 5,000 tons. Although public awareness activities are underway, further time and effort are needed to spread the use of this technology.
