The Evening Bird of the Language to Snuggle Up To: The Storytelling of the "Shinneko" (Late 18th Century)
In the mid-Edo period, Yoshiwara valued "shin neko," a quiet time for guests and prostitutes to talk alone, away from the bustle of the banquet hall. Behind the lively performance of many geisha and taiko drummers, it was believed that true emotions and feelings were best expressed in these quiet moments.
In this moment, there was no sake or entertainment, just the guests and prostitutes facing each other and discussing the fragments of their lives and their emotional turmoil. The prostitute shows her own character by her choice of words, the way she pauses, and the length of her silence, while the guests listen carefully and try to read the background of the conversation. At the very least, every word, every glance, every breath, and every breath of silence is filled with rich meaning--this was the aesthetic of the "shin neko.
This dialogue format is also a place where commercial color is suppressed and love and humanity, memory and loneliness intersect. It is in this quiet place that true feelings, expectations for the future, and anxieties that cannot be expressed in flashy entertainment are revealed. The client waits for the woman's words, and the woman searches the client's soul. The moment when the two parties' inner selves meet, it is a gesture that forms the essence of the place called Yoshiwara.
Historically, Yoshiwara was regulated and institutionalized as an amusement center under the official permission of the shogunate, but it was also a space where haikai, yokyoku, kodo (the art of incense), and other hobbies intermingled with the cutting edge of townspeople's culture. The prostitutes were not merely physical providers, but also "performers" who interacted with their customers with a sense of culture and poise. In such a world, the weight of silence, of speaking without words, was respected. Shinneko was the crystallization of the Edo people's "words, pauses, and emotions.
