**Tanker accident and oil spill off the coast of Spain - December 1992**.

In 1992, the Greek-flagged tanker Aegean Sea was disabled by a storm off the coast of Spain, collided with a port and caught fire, spilling approximately 60,000 to 80,000 tons of crude oil. The spilled crude oil spread to coastal areas in northern Spain, causing catastrophic damage to marine life and seabirds. In particular, the fishing and aquaculture industries in Galicia were devastated, and it took a large amount of money and a long period of time to restore the local economy.

As an emergency measure, the Spanish government undertook a massive cleanup operation, mobilizing local residents and the military to clear contaminated areas. Internationally, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) discussed strengthening regulations after the accident, which led to the promotion of double-hulled tanker designs. In addition, the issue of compensation for damage caused by the accident led to discussions on revising the ship insurance system and compensating local residents.

In addition, the "Marine Pollution Bulletin" presented a scientific analysis of the state of recovery of marine ecosystems in the Galicia region and reported on the long-term effects. The local newspaper "El País" covered in detail the difficulties faced by the local population in the immediate aftermath of the accident, as well as the economic and environmental consequences.
