Toray and Sekisui Chemical's Efforts to Tackle the Freshwater Life Extinction Crisis - 2020s

The extinction crisis of freshwater species in Japan in the 2020s is serious, and is particularly evident in the Tone River (Kanto region) and the Yoshino River (Shikoku). According to the Ministry of the Environment's Red List 2020, the number of endangered species has reached 3,716, and 43.3% of freshwater fish are threatened with extinction. These habitats have been affected by changes in water flow due to dam construction and hydroelectric power generation, resulting in declining populations of Japanese dace (Cyprinus carpio) and ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis).
In addition, the accumulation of pesticides and chemical substances, especially cadmium and mercury, is a cause of water quality deterioration. Toray Industries, Inc. is providing technology to improve water quality in the Tone River, and Sekisui Chemical is providing financial support for conservation activities. While these activities are important for ecosystem conservation, further efforts are required for sustainable environmental protection.
