Environment Creating a town that spins the future: Kanazawa Recycle Town Concept Summer 2025

Under the clear skies of Kanazawa, a new breath of life is beginning to move in, along with the scent of former industries. On August 19, Kaiho Sangyo, an auto dismantling company, and Tau, a company that buys and resells damaged vehicles, signed a partnership agreement. This is more than just a business partnership; it is a bold and hopeful step forward in the hope of building "Hokuriku's first" recycling town. Both companies see vehicles damaged in accidents, flooding, and other disasters as the cornerstone of a recycling-oriented society that transforms them into useful resources - not just waste.

The cornerstones of this new town are recycling engineering and advanced sorting and refining technologies. Through a safe and efficient disassembly process, which is one of Kaiho Sangyo's specialties, metal parts, plastics, and electronic components are sorted into smaller pieces. This then leads to a recycling chain appropriate for each material, e.g., melting and refining of metal scrap, cleaning and material recycling of plastics, and further to the extraction and reuse of precious and rare metals. This has also led to collection events and various collection campaigns in collaboration with local municipalities, and has fostered recycling awareness involving local residents.

Furthermore, the "Recycle Town Concept" is already being tried in other regions. Tau is in the process of launching a similar initiative in October 2024, and has formed partnerships with Daiko Trading in Akita Prefecture and Hamaya in Higashimatsuyama City, Saitama Prefecture, to promote comprehensive recycling town collaboration. The Kanazawa initiative is positioned as an expansion of that network, and is expected to facilitate the sharing of technology and knowledge between the regions.

This initiative will also contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality. Normally, vehicle dismantling and disposal involve the risk of carbon dioxide emissions and environmental pollution due to incineration and improper disposal, but by reusing materials as resources as much as possible, it is possible to reduce the environmental impact of the entire industry. In short, Recycle Town is a bridge to a sustainable future that combines both technological innovation and a shift in social consciousness.
