Ajinomoto's new frontier in "food and the environment" in the 2000s (around 2007)
In the mid-2000s, Japan's food industry was confronted with tightening international regulations concerning the prevention of global warming and resource recycling. With the Kyoto Protocol coming into effect in 2005, the obligation to reduce CO₂ emissions became a reality in Japan as well, and environmental responsiveness was becoming an indicator that would influence corporate value. In particular, for a major food manufacturer based on fermentation technology, improving the efficiency of raw material use and wastewater treatment was an unavoidable issue.
Against this backdrop, the Ajinomoto Group established its own "recycling-oriented fermentation system. By-products and residues generated in the company's amino acid fermentation process are reused as organic fertilizer for sugarcane cultivation. At plants in Brazil and Thailand, the nutrients obtained from the fermentation process are returned to the fields, and the sugarcane grown there is used again as a raw material for fermentation. This was an advanced model that promoted the coexistence of local agriculture and industry while reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers.
In addition, the company introduced a combined gas and steam turbine system to save energy and improve power generation efficiency. The frozen food factory reused used deep-frying oil as boiler fuel, and in terms of logistics, the company promoted a modal shift to rail and ship transportation, thereby thoroughly reducing energy consumption in all processes.
In terms of environmental regulations, Ajinomoto has set its own effluent standards, which are stricter than global standards, and has unified environmental management across its global network of factories. As a result, Ajinomoto has maintained the water quality at its bases in Asia and South America at the level of developed countries.
This initiative was more than just an environmental measure; it was a pioneering sustainable production model that linked food, energy, and agriculture based on the traditional Japanese technology of "fermentation. Ajinomoto's approach of sublimating recycling into a management strategy, rather than a philosophy, is a practice ahead of its time that can be seen in the biomass industry and carbon-neutral policies that followed.
