Soil remediation project for heavy metal contaminated soil in Matsumoto (2007-2024)
Since 2007, Matsumoto City has been implementing a remediation project for soil contaminated with heavy metals including lead and hexavalent chromium. Investigations and remediation have been conducted in the Matsumoto Station area and the Asama Hot Springs area. In the 2010s, contamination was newly identified in the Kiri area and other areas, and surveys were intensified throughout the region. Cleanup work is underway. The city is working to balance environmental protection and tourism resource utilization by reusing the cleaned land for lodging and commercial facilities, with the goal of reusing more than 50% of the land by 2025, and further efficiency gains are expected.
