The Vanishing Order: Entropy and the Understanding of Life, 1900-2025

The Vanishing Order: Entropy and the Understanding of Life, 1900-2025

Bergson saw life not simply as an order of matter, but as "generation and flow. While life obeys the laws of thermodynamics, it is an entity that continues to accumulate energy and reconstitute order. Even as entropy increases, life continues to create meaning and form within itself. He pointed out that the concepts of "negation" and "nothingness" have been misinterpreted and believed that the essence of life lies in the irreversible flow of time and the traces of information. Life is not a being that defies order, but a being that weaves meaningful forms out of chaos. This view can be seen as a precursor to later information theory and complex systems science. Life is a "memetic kinetic entity" that re-constructs the whole while scattering, and is the very force that creates order and meaning out of entropy.
