Climate Uniformity around Lake Biwa and the Abolition of the Sub-Field--When the Boundary between Weather and Agriculture Dissolves (December 2008)

Shiga Prefecture's Agricultural Experiment Station "Kohoku Sub-branch" will be discontinued at the end of 2008. Located in the former Kinomoto-cho (now Nagahama-shi) in the northern part of the prefecture, it was a center for agricultural technology, crop breeding, and cultivation guidance mainly for the Kohoku region. However, the main reason for the closure of this branch office was the homogenization of the climate due to global warming.

In the past, the temperature difference between the southern part of Shiga Prefecture (Kusatsu/Otsu) and the northern part (Nagahama/Yonehara) was large, and the crops and varieties that could be grown and the timing of sowing differed greatly. Therefore, the prefectural agricultural administration also conducted research and guidance using multiple sub-fields based on the climatic differences between the regions.

In recent years, however, the cold winters in the northern part of the country have eased and the amount of snow accumulation has been decreasing. Due to these reduced differences between regions, there is no longer as much demand for research unique to Kohoku as there used to be. As the technology and varieties can now be shared throughout the prefecture, the consolidation of sub-factories was considered, leading to the current discontinuation of the program.

This move is not merely a reduction of facilities, but shows that global warming is forcing a reorganization of agricultural administration and research systems as well.
