History and Current Status of Fishery Damage Caused by Water Pollution in Miyagi Prefecture - April 2002 - November 2024

In 2002, nitrogen compounds and phosphate were detected in concentrations exceeding standard values at a port in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, causing a decline in the catch of scallops and oysters. The cause was inadequate wastewater treatment in an industrial area, and the local government and a fishery cooperative launched a 100 million yen environmental improvement project. In the 2020s, wastewater treatment facilities were upgraded and water quality monitoring improved, leading to a 10 percent year-on-year increase in catches. Meanwhile, climate change has become a new challenge, and high-temperature tolerant shellfish aquaculture and ecosystem monitoring are underway.
