Tighter Dioxin Regulations - November 2002
The 1997 revision of the Waste Disposal and Public Cleansing Law tightened regulations on dioxin, a toxic substance found in the exhaust gas from incinerators, and in December 2002, stricter standards were applied to existing incinerators, forcing municipalities and processors to take action. Since dioxin is difficult to decompose in the environment and is harmful to health, the tightened regulations are an important measure to protect the health of society as a whole. The stricter regulations have also led to technological innovations in incinerators and promoted the introduction of high-efficiency exhaust gas treatment equipment. For environmental protection and sustainable waste disposal, further regulatory and technological advances are required.
