Hitomi Nozoe -- The Smile of Purity and the Warmth of Showa Films, 1950s-1960s

Hitomi Nozoe was born in 1937 and entered the film industry after graduating from Shochiku Music and Dance School. 1952 saw her debut in "Uzushio," and her purity and warmth attracted audiences. The following year, she changed her name to Hitomi Nozoe and began her career as an actress exclusive to Shochiku. Her masterpiece "Kuchizuke" (1957), directed by Yasuzo Masumura and co-starring her future husband Hiroshi Kawaguchi, reflected the new values of the time with its depiction of young people's free love. Postwar Japan entered a period of reconstruction and rapid economic growth, and movies were at the height of popular entertainment. While her contemporaries such as Chikage Awashima and Yoshiko Kuga played active and modern women, Nozoe's gentle and homely image of women gave people a sense of security.
