Asian Marine Debris Problem - 2001-2020s Summary

Asian Marine Debris Problem - 2001-2020s Summary

In the Asia-Pacific region, between 8 and 11 million tons of plastic waste entered the ocean annually between 2001 and the 2020s, 70% of which originated from this region. Jakarta Bay in Indonesia, Manila Bay in the Philippines, and the mouth of the Yangtze River in China are particularly affected, with plastic bottles (35%), food packaging (25%), and plastic bags (20%) being the main components of the waste. Japan and ASEAN countries have set waste reduction targets and are promoting technological innovation and international cooperation, but the economic burden is a challenge, with Langkawi incurring cleanup costs of more than $50 million annually. Sustainable ocean management requires stronger policies and regional cooperation.
