Global Warming and Fluctuating Harvests: Agriculture's Trials and Future

Global Warming and Fluctuating Harvests: Agriculture's Trials and Future

Global warming has had a major impact on Japanese agriculture since 2007. In Niigata Prefecture, high-temperature damage to rice has become more severe, while apple cultivation has moved northward from Aomori to Hokkaido. In southern Kyushu, mango and dragon fruit production is expanding, but pests are also increasing. 2020s will see a further rise in temperatures, resulting in lower crop quality and yields. With the development of high temperature tolerant varieties and pest control technology advancing, high temperature tolerant strawberries have been successful in Nara Prefecture, and banana exports are expanding in Okinawa Prefecture. Despite the effects of global warming, agricultural diversification and technological innovation are supporting sustainability.
