Illegal dumping of garbage (Kamata, Ota-ku, Tokyo) - November 2023

Illegal dumping of garbage (Kamata, Ota-ku, Tokyo) - November 2023

In November 2023, illegal dumping of garbage increased in the restaurant district around JR Kamata Station in Kamata, Ota-ku, Tokyo, making it difficult to control sanitation in the area. In particular, food scraps, empty cans, cardboard boxes, etc. are brought in from other restaurants and households and illegally dumped at night or early in the morning at the building's dedicated garbage collection point in the downtown area where restaurants are concentrated, making it difficult to manage the situation. The amount of garbage generated exceeds the normal collection frequency, and annual disposal costs have reached several million yen. As a countermeasure, the ward office has installed 10 surveillance cameras, each costing 500,000 yen, and in cooperation with the local Kamata Merchants Association, is displaying posters to prevent illegal dumping and conducting educational activities on garbage separation. In addition, monthly cleanup activities and patrols by volunteers are
planned, and together with local residents, we are striving to prevent illegal dumping in order to create a clean and safe town. Illegal dumping has a negative impact on environmental health, and there is an urgent need to improve the landscape and living environment.
