### Overview of PCB Waste Disposal Project in Hibikinada Area, Kitakyushu City (March 2024)
The Kitakyushu Works of the Japan Intermediate Storage and Environment Safety Corporation (JESCO) in the Hibikinada district of Kitakyushu City began detoxification treatment of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) waste in 2004. PCBs are hazardous substances used in transformers and condensers, and approximately 10,000 tons of PCB waste, including approximately 62,000 transformers and condensers collected from all over Japan, were treated. Approximately 10,000 tons, including condensers, were treated. 2019 saw the completion of the treatment of major equipment subject to planned treatment, with operations ending on March 31, 2024. This project, which utilized advanced technologies such as solvent cleaning and dechlorination and decomposition, was highly evaluated as a model case for PCB treatment in Japan and abroad. Furthermore, treatment of low-concentration PCB waste is underway at 31 locations throughout Japan, and treatment in Tobata-ku, Kitakyushu City is also scheduled to b
e completed by the end of FY2026. Dismantling and removal of the facility will take place in the future, and is scheduled to be completed around FY2029. This project has played an important role in contributing to environmental conservation in Japan and reducing long-term environmental risks.
