Cell phones and PCs contain precious metals such as gold, silver, copper, and palladium, and their recovery and recycling has been emphasized from the perspective of effective use of resources and environmental protection! Medal for Everyone Project" was implemented for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, and used cell phones and small home appliances were collected from all over Japan. Through this initiative, approximately 7,898,985 tons of home appliances and 6.21 million cell phones were collected, 32 kg of gold, 3,500 kg of silver, and 2,200 kg of copper were recycled, and approximately 5,000 medals were produced.
However, Japan's smartphone collection rate has stagnated at about 17%, and many users keep used handsets on hand, which poses a challenge. Since recycling cell phones contributes to the reuse of valuable resources and the reduction of environmental impact, efforts to improve the collection rate and promote recycling are required in the future.
