History of Illegal Disposal of Industrial Waste in Dallas-Imperial County

Since the early 2000s, illegal dumping of industrial waste has become a problem in Dallas and Imperial Counties in the United States. Scrap iron and copper, polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and waste oil contaminated groundwater and the air, adversely affecting the health of residents. In particular, the 2018 "Shingle Mountain" incident, in which Blue Star Recycling illegally piled up roofing material waste, led to residents complaining of respiratory illnesses; in 2023, waste removal was proceeding with a $450,000 budget; since 2022, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ( TCEQ) introduced new regulations to ensure proper disposal and increased monitoring. In Imperial County, a combination of citizen participation, monitoring, and penalties is underway. Cooperation between the community and government is expected to lead to a shift to sustainable waste management.
