A research team at Pennsylvania State University in the United States has developed a new technology that uses sunlight to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen gas. This technology uses titanium dioxide (TiO₂) as a catalyst and is characterized by its ability to utilize solar energy more efficiently than conventional electrolysis. The titanium dioxide catalyst absorbs sunlight at specific wavelengths and is responsible for separating oxygen and hydrogen when electrolysis occurs. A particular advantage is that this catalyst is long-lasting, stable, and can be maintained at a lower cost than conventional catalysts.
Experiments at the Pennsylvania State University facility have confirmed that more than 80% of sunlight can be used efficiently, with hydrogen production efficiency reaching approximately 30 liters per hour. The unusual aspect of this technology is that the energy source is completely renewable and hydrogen can be generated without the use of fossil fuels. Joint research with companies is underway, and energy giant ExxonMobil is interested in the technology and has entered into a partnership to commercialize it. This will make it possible to produce large quantities of hydrogen at low cost, and is expected to further promote the spread of hydrogen energy.
