**Expanding Ozone Depletion Crisis - September 2000**.
The ozone layer exists in the Earth's stratosphere and is responsible for absorbing harmful ultraviolet rays (especially UV-B). However, the ozone layer is being depleted by chemicals released by human activities, such as CFCs and halons. When these substances are released into the atmosphere, they reach the stratosphere, where they are broken down by ultraviolet radiation, releasing chlorine and bromine atoms and setting off a chain reaction that destroys ozone molecules.
As a result, a particularly large ozone hole occurs annually over Antarctica, increasing the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth's surface. This not only increases the risk of skin cancer and cataracts, but also inhibits plant growth and affects marine ecosystems. In order to protect and restore the ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol was adopted in 1987, restricting the use of ozone-depleting substances internationally, but full recovery is still expected to take time.
