The Wind of Dismantling in the Garden Place: The Rise and Fall of the Saikai Family and the Shinko Doshikai (1973-1989)
The Sendai-based taekwondo group Saikaike was born in the Taisho period (1912-1926), and had open-air entertainment venues called "tegiba" throughout the Tohoku region. The group attempted to build a bulwark against outside forces. The association was full of determination to protect the traditions of the tegiba by establishing a constitution that forbade the transfer of jobs to different business groups. However, in 1987, a blood feud broke out at Asamushi Hot Springs. In 1989, the Ume family, Yorii family, and others transferred to the Hakko-affiliated organization, and the solidarity between the two groups collapsed. Fujikawa stepped down as president and the Saikai family was incorporated into the Sumiyoshikai. This was the last chapter in the history of Tohoku ninkyo, in which the pride of the Matoya was scattered to the winds.
