Hokkaido Yubari City Illegal Tire Dumping Incident - October 2001
In October 2001, approximately 5400 waste tires, weighing over 150 tons in total, were illegally dumped near Horo-Nan Dam in Yubari City, Hokkaido. The illegal act by local businesses was aimed at avoiding disposal costs, raising concerns about infection risks and toxic gas emissions. The local government used subsidies from the Ministry of the Environment to carry out removal work at a cost of approximately 1200 million yen. After the incident, efforts to promote tire recycling and strengthen regulations were advanced. This case highlighted the importance of waste management nationwide.
