Blue Angel and the History of Public Procurement in Germany (Berlin, October 2024)
The history of Blue Angel and German public procurement began in the 1990s and formed the foundation for environmental protection. During this period, the City of Berlin procured large quantities of recycled paper, BMW and Volkswagen in the automotive industry promoted the use of recycled materials, the 2000s saw the formal introduction of environmental labeling products through an EU directive, and the use of recycled plastic products in the City of Hamburg. in 2016, Blue Angel certification became mandatory, and progress was made by BMW and the city of Frankfurt; in the 2020s, the number of certified items increased, with about 15% of all public procurement devoted to eco-labeled products. This has resulted in a 10% reduction of greenhouse gases per year nationwide.
