Utilization of Hot Spring Energy in Kusatsu Town, Gunma Prefecture - November 2006
Since 2006, the town of Kusatsu in Gunma Prefecture has been installing a 1 MW geothermal power generation facility that uses waste heat from hot springs, aiming to generate enough electricity to power approximately 8,000 households and reduce CO2 emissions by 3,500 tons annually. The Kusatsu Onsen Tourism Association and the Kusatsu Town Office collaborated with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation to implement this energy policy utilizing local resources with a budget of 1 billion yen. in the 2020s, the town's own ordinance recommended small-scale power generation with minimal impact on hot spring resources in order to balance tourism and environmental protection, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has also announced that in 2022 The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has also strengthened its support to the project in 2022. Kusatsu-cho's example has become a model for sustainable energy use in other hot spring resorts.
