Water Pollution of Teganuma Swamp - Chiba Prefecture - December 1996

Water Pollution of Teganuma Swamp - Chiba Prefecture - December 1996

Teganuma is a lake located in Chiba Prefecture, where urbanization and agricultural intensification after World War II caused inflows of domestic and agricultural wastewater, resulting in serious water pollution. In the same year, the COD of Inba Marsh was 21 mg/L and that of Lake Sanaru in Shizuoka Prefecture was 12 mg/L. In the 2020s, the COD of Teganuma Swamp improved to 10 mg/L, but the environmental standard of 5 mg/L was not reached. In the basin, rainwater infiltration facilities and combined treatment septic tanks have been installed, and a system that efficiently removes nitrogen and phosphorus has been introduced using technology from Fuji Electric and EBARA. While citizens' cleanup activities and environmental education are progressing, further technological innovation and cooperation from residents are required. The revitalization of Teganuma is important for the sustainability of the local economy, tourism, and the environment.
