Ecosystem Impacts of Biomass Utilization - November 2002
In Japan, biomass resources such as livestock excrement, food waste, and wood waste are being recycled, but there are concerns about the effects on the ecosystem, such as river pollution caused by the conversion to manure. Water pollution is particularly serious, and appropriate management is required. A plan is underway to use biomass to supply 10% of the nation's energy needs, but technical and cost issues remain. It is important to consider the impact of biomass use on the environment, while at the same time finding sustainable ways to use biomass.
