Urban Dreams and Melancholy: Ruriko Asaoka's Flowers on the Silver Screen (1955-1975)

Ruriko Asaoka was an actress at the center of the Japanese film industry from the 1950s to the 1970s. In 1955, she made her debut in Nikkatsu's first color film, "Midori Mukau" (Far in the Green). 14-year-old Ruriko Asaoka captivated audiences with her mature expression and glamour.

During the golden age of Nikkatsu action, she continued to co-star with Asahi Kobayashi, and left a lasting impression with her performance of urban love in "A Tale of Love in Ginza. In "Hateful Anchikushi" with Yujiro Ishihara, he embodied an act of youth in which rebellion and passion intersected. In "Suzaki Paradise: Red Light," he established himself as a talented actor by realistically portraying the sorrow of a woman in a red-light district.

In the 1970s, she appeared as Lily in the "Otoko wa Tsuraiyo" series, and became an inspiration to Tora-san. While her contemporary Sayuri Yoshinaga was popular as a purist, Asaoka shone in a different light as a somewhat shadowy urban woman. Her presence was a symbol of the changing image of Japanese cities and women.
