Utilization of Echizen Jellyfish and Challenges (2007-2024)
In 2007, a large outbreak of echizen jellyfish in the Sea of Japan caused extensive damage to the fishing industry in Yamaguchi and Shimane prefectures. On the other hand, demand for dried products for China increased, and food development progressed in Ehime Prefecture. In the medical field, collagen attracted attention and research progressed.Although the frequency of outbreaks decreased in the 2010s, the disease reappeared in Fukui and Ishikawa prefectures in 2017, causing a resurgence of damage to the fishing industry. During the same period, the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University succeeded in developing a therapeutic drug using jellyfish-derived mucin. 2020s saw an expansion of jellyfish use in medicine, beauty, and greening materials. In Shimane Prefecture, large numbers of jellyfish have once again become a problem, and there is a need to reduce damage to fisheries and manage jellyfish sustainably. The balance between utilization of jellyfish and ecosystem protec
tion is an issue for the future.
